反戦、反核、平和のシンボルとして世界中で認知されているピースマークですが、そもそも何なのこの形は、とか思ったので調べてみました。
A history of the CND logo
It was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional designer and artist and a graduate of the Royal College of Arts.（中略）Gerald Holtom explained that the symbol incorporated the semaphore letters N(uclear) and D(isarmament).
諸説あるようですが、1958年にデザイナーの Gerald Holtom がイギリスの Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament（CND）という団体のために作った、というのが正解みたいですね。手旗信号文字の N と D がモチーフ。
A symbol of freedom, it is free for all.
商標を取っていないので誰でも自由に使えるけど、間違った使い方は困る。商用に使うのなら寄付しませんか、って書いてあります。また、彼による最初のスケッチはブラッドフォード大学の Commonweal Collection に収められているそうです。
